Alternate Energy, Biomass Briquette

Can fuel briquettes from groundnut shells save Gambia?

Most Gambians rely on mainly wood fuels to cook with and charcoal because of which Gambia is at a very vulnerable point now, with the amount of forest left.

Desertification and deforestation are great problems facing developing nations like Gambia. Adequate means of disposing wastes are also lacking, hence, converting them to other useful products such as briquettes for domestic fuel is highly desirable.

Some years ago the Gambia Government established a long term commitment to replacing environmentally damaging urban wood consumption with groundnut shell briquettes, since groundnut shells are available in large quantities in Gambia because of its groundnut industry, making it a great raw material for briquettes.

Waste groundnut shells are transformed into affordable fuel briquettes which are distributed with fuel-efficient stoves produced by local welders.

These briquettes could then be made available at low cost to urban domestic and industrial wood consumers thereby making some progress towards the government’s long-term development objective of substituting environmentally damaging urban wood consumption with groundnut shell briquettes.

These groundnut shell briquettes, not only saves users resources, time and effort, but also reduces the health risks from smoke exposure. This remarkable alternative to traditional charcoal use can also  be used in restaurants, cantines or industries using heat from biomass for boilers or smokeries.

These  developments should ensure that we never again witness burning and rotting heaps of groundnut shells in the Gambia, a country facing deforestation and escalating oil import bills.

Hence it is safe to conclude that, the utilization of ground shell in the production of briquettes can greatly provide alternative energy sources for domestic cooking and also serve as a measure in curbing the environmental hazard posed by poor methods of agricultural waste disposal in addition to reducing the popular use of charcoal which has an adverse effect on our environment (deforestation).

HiTech Agro focuses on increasing the access to modern forms of renewable energy. We do this by making smart and clean technologies, such as biomass pellets, biomass briquettes, equipments related to biomass processing and solid waste management, and we try to make it accessible to economically-deprived people in remote areas.
